PDR Line Board - Paintless Dent Repair /Removal Training

PDR Line Board - Paintless Dent Repair /Removal Training

What is a PDR Line Board you ask? Well it is a type of reflection (Striped Lines) used to read the damaged panel. Although it may seem intimidating, it's actually not once you are properly instructed about how it works.

Common Reflections

We must make a clear statement before we go any further. "There is no such thing as one reflection more superior than the other." There are several common reflections used such as Fog, Shadow, Pole with stripe, and too many others to name. The truth about reflections is how well can you read your own reflection? How well from the start when you were trained or when you get trained will be the most important.

Straight Means Fixed

When we teach Lines, we explain the use of the board in outside conditions. Why? Because in the real world, you won't have a nice comfy shop to work in. How many indoor dealerships do you know? But back to the topic. Lines dramatically show signs of curvature but there's a slight catch 22! You have to develop a trained eye. You can't just pop a Line board on a vehicle and think you can distinguish what to do.

Line patterns is what helps you as a guide. a line that is pinched, panel is indicating a high spot or going outward. A line that is fat or wide, indicates the panel has a low spot or indentation. Simple to say but hard to practice.

San Diego - Paintless Dent Repair - Removal PDR

San Diego Paintless Dent Repair / Removal (PDR) Technique using the Glue Pulling Method

This dent was caused by a person's body running into it. As you notice the dent has a massive and tight crown above it. In order to release stress from the crown, we used the glue pulling method for this type of paintless dent repair technique. Now the easy part was pulling the dent, no big deal right? Not really. Knowing exactly where to place the tabs can be tricky sometimes but more importantly, knowing how hard to pull. We used a 5lb slide hammer to do the job. One think you don't want to do, is over stretch the area. It could have been a done deal if we did.

Next was the hard part. If you are a current PDR tech, you'll understand there is always some sort of crowns on all dents. Some are more obvious than others. It took us 3 1/2 hours to tap down this crown even when most of the stress was taken off. It's a battle back and forth. Push, knock down, push, knock down. As the dent got smaller, so did the crowns by becoming harder to identify. In these cases, we place our line reflection back further to view the waves (high and lows) that tell us what is left. We used a soft tip tap down so we did not cause tap down pits. The metal is so soft, it was like a tin can. I hate soft metal. A big dent like this can make or break you.

All in all, it turned out pretty decent and the customer was very happy. For more information please visit our official website DentTime.com

San Diego Mobile Dent & Crease Repair

San Diego Professional Mobile Paintless Dent Repair and Crease Removal

Removing creases can be pretty tricky for the most part. Imagine taking a piece of paper, folding it and then trying to iron the line out.

Performing paintless dent repair with creases take precise tool tip control. We use a special and unique board called the "Lines." This line board basically is point of reference. It tells us where to push, if the metal is going outward or inward. As you watch the video, be aware the tool is being wedged between the impact beam and the skin of the panel. A very thin tool as you see in the video (whale tail) is used for applying pressure with one side of the blade. Perfect pushes blend the dent into the orange peel. Depending on how deep a crease is, the results vary between 90-100% removal.

If you are planning to have PDR done in the near future and you are not in San Diego, please note, repairs vary depending on the individual experience of your PDR technician. Find a local PDr tech in your area and visit reconexpress.com for a PDR tech near you.

Paintless Dent Removal at its Best San Diego

When it comes to deep and complex paintless dent repair, Dent Time is the specialist. Removing a body line dent like you see above takes a lot of experience and skill. Please be aware, performing this type of repair is not typical for most PDR companies. This is a very difficult repair to achieve w/out disturbing the paint finish.

How did we really do it? A few things are involved. We use a special line reflection that gives us tremendous detail about the dent itself. Reading the line board is probably the most important factor why this repair turned out successfully. The reflection of the lines give distinctive patterns.

Tools. Special designed tools are used to gain access behind the dent. We also use tools that gently tap down the area of the panel that indicates high spots to help the flexibility of the paint.

Experience.

Over time one can build a lot of experience but pushing the envelope beyond what is possible builds skill and consistent results. We always are up for a challenge when it comes to complex and advanced paintless dent repair. Not only we perform it we teach the skill as well.

We encourage if you have some photos you would like to get an estimate for please click here and you'll be taken to our main website.

Advanced Paintless Dent Repair/Removal Training PDR

Although this diagram demonstrates a tactical way to remove a big dent with paintless dent repair, it is highly recommended to get professional one-on-one PDR training to gain the fullest benefits.

This PDR dent was attacked using a glue pulling method and finished off with lots of crown work and precision pushing with steel rods. We would like to stress, there were many steps between the photos to get this dent completely out. A big dent like this requires high experience and patience to get satisfactory results. We will in the future post a video of how much of a monster and challenging paintless dent repair this was.

Knowing how to remove big dents is all about knowing how to finish. If you can’t finish a small pitted ding, you won’t be able to finish a big dent. Big dents have many elements that are involved in a repair such as; crowns, trapped pressure, knocking down, tool selection, where to start and how to finish.

If you have questions about advanced paintless dent removal/repair pdr training, please either visit denttime.com or post a comment and we’ll be glad to give some feed back.
