New Sister Web Site for Dent Time Launched "Dent Repair San Diego"

We recently launched another sister automotive reconditioning web site called "Dent Repair San Diego" www.DentRepairSanDiego.com This site has actually been existing for over 3 years but we decided to give it a serious makeover.

Our goal was to create an even better and more exciting site than our official web site DentTime.com Although Dent Time still has it's flavor, we really like our new look for Dent Repair San Diego. It has all the goodies needed to give our customers what they are looking for. And that is called, "answers." We provide lots of video and we mean lots. From individual showcasing to a video gallery hosted by Youtube, there is always some sort of entertainment regarding the San Diego Dent Time automotive reconditiong services.

Our next goal was to educate but not ovewhelm. We wanted to keep it informative but not too busy. A blanced web site was what we were focused on. Clutter on a site can really kill the eyes and influece the visitor to click off right away. But with that in mind, we created each page to have it's own feel. Some had more info than others but as I mentioned earlier, we kept our site balanced.

From paintless dent removal (PDR) to bumper and wheel repair, this web site is totally built for intrest. We plan to add more pages and articles as the site gets bigger. But as for now, we are actually still concentrating on the existing pages and polishing up the site. So bare with us, it's considered still under construction.

San Diego Average Cost Estimate for Paintless Dent Repair / Door Ding Removal

Price Structure and Costs for Dent Time in San Diego & North County. Other cities and states vary including; Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, Temecula and Las Vegas.

Most people wonder what are the most common paintless dent removal dents that are repaired. We'll give you a breakdown of about 4 different common and typical dents.

The Door Ding

The most common by far is the door ding. These typical little dents are classed as the size of a quarter or smaller (1" inch). Caused from mainly car doors, shopping carts and flying objects. Generally they are not the most difficult but it doesn't mean they are always the easiest either. A big misconception is the size of these little annoying dents. Even though they are not very large, depending on the depth, location and access will play a part determining the final cost.

Generally the cost is between $89-$125. Multiple dings and panels are discounted.

Average repair time: 20-60 minutes.

Medium Dents

Second most common are dents that range from golf ball to a business card size (2"-5" inches). These type of dents normally are caused from flying objects, moving vehicles and objects dropping from above or against. The bigger the dent, usually the more stretched the panel has become. Therefor more time is involved. Same rules apply. Depth, location and access will determine final cost.

General cost range can expect to pay between $125-$225

Average repair time: 45-90 minutes

Creases

Dents that are the appearance of a line. These particular crease dents are one of the most complex dent removals to achieve. Imagine folding a piece of paper and then trying to iron the line out. Well imagine being so precise with a tool we use and pin pointing the exact area we need to push on without disturbing your finish. It's very difficult and that is why creases are considered one of the most challenging type of dents to remove.

General cost range: Depending on the length and depth, $125-$400

Average repair time: 1-3 hours

Large Dents

Large dents are 6" in diameter or bigger. The more stretched the more difficult. Some large dents are not as complex as they appear. In some cases, we can manage to release pressure just in the right spot and bring back 80% of the panel back to new within 5-10 minutes. But in most cases, it will take time and a lot of hand-eye coordination to work the dent out.

General cost range: Depending on the depth, access and location, $200 and up

Average repair time: 1 1/2 -3 hours

Not Your Average Dent - Advanced Paintless Dent Repair

This video was created for demonstration purposes on just how big of a dent we can remove. Obviously PDR has come a long way. But we must keep in mind, cars that were made 15-20 years ago were like tanks! The gage of the sheet metal was thicker and dents these big were mainly caused from minor car accidents. Not just a slight bump or someone falling against the panel. These days, the sheet metal on a car are super thin and protected by basically a roll cage and impact beams from inside.

Now still, the thinner the sheet metal, that hard to work with. Picture holding a beer can and squishing it half way with your hand. Now see how easy or challenging it would be to un-wrinkle and smooth out the dent. It won't be easy. Just like the video you see now is not easy.

PDR is an art. It takes time, patience and experience to consistently perform quality repairs at this level. You might even be surprised that even taking out a nickel to quarter size dings take incredible skill as well. Some are deep, some are in bad locations and some are on aluminum panels. For the worse, all of the above can happen. Finishing is the essence. In some cases, it can take 6 months to a year to consistently perform PDR at a professional level. Bigger dents can take longer.

Training is obviously important. The longer the better. Building muscle memory, eye-hand coordination and soaking up the techniques are what builds the learning curvature much quicker. I personally train my students 4 weeks in most cases. For some I break it up in two 2 week sessions. I just finished editing this auto reconditioning video for my company Dent Time. I get bored with a plain effect on how our services are performed. Instead I took a different approach. Dutch Spyker Paintless Dent Repair n Ding Removal - San Diego

We performed this Dutch Spyker a couple of years ago and thought it would be good to show case on the blog. A terrible car to do PDR on. I mean this thing is built from aircraft aluminum, even the connectors and parts are made out of this crazy stuff. The reason being so difficult is due to the heavy memory. When I push on the dent, no budging! I had to use heat to make it even move a little bit. This repair took about 2 1/2 hours. No kidding! Compared to a steel soor this dent would have taken me about 20-30 minutes tops with the crown work. Yes I did say crowns. This dent has a nice eye brow over the low which made the repair even more difficult.

My advide is if you ever get the chance to work on one of these, don't!

The dent took nearly 3 hours to complete. Working crowns around the corners are deceiving. The dent was deep. I decided to glue pull to take off the pressure from the outside (trapped crowns) so I could push from behind without jeopardizing the finish. Motorcycle Paintless Dent Repair / Removal Training Tutorial (Basic)

Well if you follow my blogs, I try to make things as interesting as possible. I stay pretty busy between running my two companies, training, finding time to post and edit videos. In case you were wondering, I do my own video editing myself. I believe you really have to know a lot about a little. And so I try.

Now about this Harley Davidson (Fat Boy) gas tank dent removal. It's actually a warm up from what's is to come. I will have the full version of this on AutoLecture.com. I will be releasing some DVDs shortly regarding my line board, basic training and other interesting things you PDR techs like. By the way, if you have any suggestions on what type of dents to do, please comment. I'll do my best and try to fulfill your requests regarding PDR.



About the dent. This Harley tank was very challenging. One thing I did not mention was that the frame holding the tank was not bolted. I had one of my other techs holding the frame and he's 6'5" 260lb and it was still moving while I was pushing! I should have filmed that. That might have been even more interesting. So. I used a Ultra Dent Tools 24" double bend soft tip. Used a semi sharp knock down and some patience.

Working on Harley tanks can be very difficult because of the gage of the steel. At times, I could not find my tip when pushing. The metal had very little flex to indicate where the tip of my tool was. I turned by line board way out to make the lines smaller so I can see the slightest pinch when I pushed. Still it was very difficult to identify. For beginners, I don't recommend doing gas tanks right off the bat. Get good at reading your board and mastering precise tool tip location. That way you will have less doubt where your tool tip is at. Tanks like these can hurt your confidence or ego in a hurry!

If you are working in a cold environment, it might be a good idea to heat up the area really warm. The clear coat will less likely spider or crack on you and not to mention it helps with flexibility for the paint and metal. If you are not around any electricity, use a small pocket torch and wave near the surface of the dent. NOT TOO CLOSE! Glue pulling is not an option here. One thing, the clear coat is not as strong. Especially with a painted pinstripe going across the dent. Another reason, the dent was too deep to pull.

The repair took just about over one hour and 45 minutes. Cost was $260.

How Much Does Paintless Dent Repair/Removal Cost?

We created a basic price guide for our consumers who want to know the average cost of our paintless dent removal services. Now it's not a set stone guide. There are some stipulations. For one thing, if the panel is made out of aluminum or against a body line, behind a difficult to reach brace or roof, there will be additional costs. In most cases, our price guide gives the customer a better idea of what to expect far as price is concerned. At the end, we encourage them to email us some photos and how to take them as well for the best accurate quote as possible.



Some of the things we stress about is location, depth, access and sharpness. A small ding can sometimes be more difficult than a larger one. A smaller ding can be very sharp which means the paint is stretched. The more stretched a dent is, the harder, longer and more patience it takes to remove without jeopardizing the paint.

Every now and then we get customers who are approached by men in parking lots claiming they do dent repair, bumper and paint work. All of them have no identification or logos. Volvo Paintless Dent Repair n Ding Removal San Diego

This Volvo dent repair was not easy by no means. Actually we mis-underestimated this repair by a long shot. Most of our estimates are given through email and if we get more than one photo, we can USUALLY determine an accurate quote. There are circumstances that can arise. For instance, some photos don't tell the whole story. The reflection or angle can hide what we need to see or it can actually appear more complex.

In most cases we are able to give an accurate quote for the most part. But unfortunately we did not for this case. We don't like to change our quotes unless it was something totally obvious that was not seen in the photos. So in this case, we stuck with our quote and did the job right as usual.

The repair time was 2 1/2 hours for $250. The dents were worth $350 at least. Please understand that the depth of the smaller one was crazy deep. The deep small one took over an hour and 20 minutes itself.

San Diego Motorcycle Tank Paintless Dent Repair/Removal

If you have never seen paintless dent removal performed of a motorcycle tank then here's your chance. Most motorcycle tanks can be somewhat very tricky. Access, how thick the gage of the metal and tip location can be the most challenging.

I always wanted to film a motorcycle tank but in most cases I either forgot my video camera or just forgot I had it with me. But lately, I have filmed 2 last week. This one you see here I will be making a training dvd that will be out later next month.



I find most PDR techs are interested doing motorcycle tanks but are afraid to take on a job because they aren't sure what it will exactly entail. Tools, tips, leverage and reading the line board all play a part. Although sometimes it's just plain bad luck and you may not even be able to reach because of a baffle inside blocking access. Glue pulling can be an option but I find some motorcycles (like Harley) don't have a real strong clear coat and pulling paint is a risk. Even at that, sometimes the dents are too sharp for pulling. But for the most part, it's a good challenge I enjoy doing.

About This Repair

This PDR repair was performed on a GSXR Suzuki 1000. It actually had 3 dents. One I could not remove completely because it was hit so deep against the body line but I improved it a lot. It took me about 2 hours to complete. I used a few tools which I will name in my PDR dvd. I plan to give lots of good info and tips about performing PDR on motorcycle tanks.

I had to be patient and cross check my work at all times. Careful pushes with accurate pressure helped create a clean removal. These tanks are always a challenge but heck, it is what it is.

BMW X5 Crease Repair - San Diego Paintless Dent Repair

Here we have a really deep crease on the door of a BMW X5. My approach is to work from the outside edges but first I must knock down the crowns or also known as the highs.

Knocking down helps for several reasons. #1 is it releases tension from the center and #2 it also helps the paint keep flexibility while applying pressure from behind.

Now since I offer personal training and sell a detailed PDR Line Board manual, I can't tell you exactly how and what tools I used to remove the dent. What I can tell you though is that this type of dent will take a lot of patience and accurate pushes to get your reflection straight as possible.

Bentley GT - Removing Door Panel Tutorial for PDR

I created this video tutorial for my online auto reconditioning directory ReconExpress.com I think this will most techs out there who work on highline and exotics. This Bentley has to be one of the most time consuming door panel removals I have done. Lots of wires, lots of cables and lots of time if you are not use to doing a lot. Thank the lord for video! Anyways, take a peek.

It's not a common thing to work on a Bentley. But that's not why we filmed this door panel removal tutorial. It's because if you ever try to wedge your tool between the glass and the skin, you will most likely bust the window! I have done at least a 100 Bentley's and I have broken about 3 windows. How did it happen? Easy, I pushed the limit and paid for it. Literally. That's why I thought this would be interesting to film.

Bentley windows are dual pane. In other words two separate sheets of glass laminated together. The slightest pressure can make them crack or break all together. I thought this video would be a little unique and just maybe you techs out there might be able to use this information for a Bentley PDR repair some day.

Door panels aren't all that hard, you just have to be patient and be willing to learn. Heck, nothing is harder than learning PDR right? Anyways, check out the video and if you feel like it, let me know what ya guys think?

Our PDR Line Board Doesn't Lie - Paintless Dent Repair/Removal

Our Company Dent Time and highly trained technicians use a unique line board to remove the ding or dent. What makes this board so special are the lines themselves. The curvature of the reflection gives the technician a "map" about the dent.

If the line is "fat", the dent is low. If the line is "skinny or pinched", the dent is high or going outward. The line board shows us a lot of detail. Big dents, body lines, dings and even creases are a plus using the line board. Although creases seem to be the biggest challenge to remove for the industry, the line board actually makes creases become easier to repair. Although, using the line board does have its learning curve but once mastered, it's a great asset to any PDR techs arsenal.

PDR Training - Advanced PDR Dent Repair - Dent Time

Here is a pretty nasty crease I removed from an 04 VW Jetta. The paintless dent repair / removal (PDR) process took nearly 3 1/2 hours. I used a few tools and a knockdown. Very little tapping though.

Creases are definitely a challenge no matter what length and depth. It's like folding a piece of paper and then ironing the line out. You have to be very precise or in the end, you'll still see a line. Between technique, patience and experience helped assist this to become a successful repair. Jetta Crease Dent Repair San Diego / PDR North County

Dent Time of San Diego - Well, we satisfied another customer and sharpened our PDR skills by removing a challenging 3 foot crease from a door. We actually removed another 8" crease as well on the quarter panel but decided not to share it all in this video. We will be showing the video in entirely in another post. Perhaps a pay-per view tutorial but we're not sure as of yet.

We know this video is short but you must appreciate we get to the point in a hurry. This crease removal actually took 3 1/2 hours to complete. A lot of patience and blistered fingers. This repair was challenging for numerous reasons. #1 was it was a crease. #2 We had to be precise. #3 There was backing behind the panel which causes our tool tip to be not as accurate. #4 The crease was long and became deeper as we went. #5 We had to make 5-6 passes.

Creases are one of the most challenging PDR dent repairs to achieve. That's why we wanted to share our testimonial crease repair video. It shows the crease but not long enough to show detail. We promise, we'll show you more from a tutorial and how we attacked it.

Bentley Paintless Dent Repair San Diego - Explains Process

Well, for those who keep up with my blog, here's a little something different. I created this video because I get many people who ask me about my techniques, the line board and the PDR process itself. My Paintless Dent Repair/Removal video was created to inform and educate all types of people. From potential customers, trainees, veteran PDR techs and just about anyone interested about the PDR process.

Now please keep in mind, this is a real basic explanation so don't be too critical. I left a lot out and some things on purpose. I do have to mention, PDR is not easy as I may make it appear to be. Pinpointing a sharp tool without missing is extremely difficult. That alone takes hours and hours of practice. And for some it may take months to develop accurate hand-eye coordination.

The line board I use is a high gloss black plastic with 1/4" white lines spaced apart the same demention. The black and white line as you can tell in the video reflect very well. I have tested all kinds of colors and backgrounds but nothing (In My Opinion) generates a consistent and more readable contrast than black n white. In other words, it works for me.

What I didn't mention in the video is that the Bentley had some serious thick backing laminated behind the panel. Basically, sound density material to keep the vehicle more quite on the road. I had to use a very sharp tool and I mean pick sharp. There was no other way or I would not be able to pinpoint. Oh and yes, I pulled the panel. That is another video that will be coming soon.

Finishing the last 5%-10% is always the hardest. This is what separates the men from the boys. Unfortunately for the retail market, it can be hard for them to distinguish a decent repair from a great repair. And this is one reason behind my video. But back to the subject. If you notice when you are trying to finish the last part, the center becomes hard to pinpoint. Ever wonder why? Well it could be numerous things like; not being patient, using the wrong tool, incorrectly reading your board, your not eye-level and probably the most obvious, your experience. Hang in there though. You'll get it or maybe not? That's up to you! If you find yourself still struggling, then you might consider Advanced PDR Training. This will definitely speed up your learning curve.

Mercedes Benz Deep Paintless Dent Repair - PDR Training

When I saw this dent and I knew I had to at least take some photos and document my PDR process. I never get tired of taking photos of my work. Besides, it's really not work. To me it's having fun doing what I love. Paintless Dent Removal has become my passion behind marketing my passion. I also train PDR personally as well. From beginner to advanced, I share my passion and devotion to paintless dent removal and the auto reconditioning market.

Now enough about that. Let's briefly talk about this dent repair. It is quite intimidating indeed for any experienced tech. Although if you are an experienced tech, that feeling only last briefly until you begin to perform the job. Tools were essential. Wrong tools, wrong results. Although it takes more than tools to gain good results. A little patience, correctly reading the board and of coarse... experience.

I used a bladed shaved door tool (Ultra Dent Tools) to do most of the dirty work. I also used a knock down from (Dent Craft Tools) or (Dent Gear) to remove the crowns and highs. Now I can't just rush into the center. If I do, I will cause an oil can effect and then it will be a done deal, game over. I work from the top, then tap. I use this technique back n forth and switching sides in between so I keep the dent balanced.

Little by little within two hours, I have completed the job. No sanding, painting. Just one happy customer and a little satisfaction.

Body Line Dent Repair - PDR Paintless Dent Removal Training

Here we have a fairly deep dent on the body line of a 750IL BMW. As you can see when you blow click on the diagram, you'll notice the pinched lines above the center of the dent in photo #1. If you don't release pressure off the crown, you are going to have a real hard time moving the dent.

The #2 photo you'll notice the lines above the center dent are now straighter. Which indicates pressure has been removed. From here, we'll work gradually push from top to bottom into the center.

As the we work the dent towards the center, the outside surrounding area will become tighter (Photo #3). We want to knock down the outside to help relieve pressure. This helps the flexibility in the paint so we don't cause and cracking. Now it's important you are very accurate pushing. A good idea would be to use some type of protection on the tip of your tool like tape or a plastic cover.

#4 photos shows a slight high and a low. You want to keep your dent always clean as possible before you work the center. (Some cases, you can work the center direct but in this case, the dent is too deep for this method) Make sure you switch sides between pushing and knocking down so you can keep your dent balanced and clean.

#5 This photo shows that we are close after repeating steps 3 & 4. Again we are always checking from one side to the other.

#6 The final step. Cross checking is important. Stand up and move your board in all directions to catch any curvature or fade that will indicate your repair. Clean and polish.
